Please note that this event is NOT at St Philips Church, where we usually hold our Study Days. It is at ST MARY ABBOTS CHURCH HALL (details below). THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY-BOOKED. This study day will explore the claim that mind-altering substances, specifically psychedelics, can play an important role in triggering mystical and psi-conducive states of consciousness. Humanity has valued such substances throughout history but only in the last century have their effects been investigated scientifically and studies of the link with psychical research are even more recent. Five leading experts will come together to discuss the historical, anthropological, psychological and parapsychological aspects of the topic. There will be particular focus on the use of substances such as psilocybin, LSD and ayahuasca to occasion mystical and psychic experiences. Scientific studies in this area are currently restricted by legal constraints, so this problem will also be addressed. The day will end with a general discussion, including audience participation.

GETTING THERE

London Underground:
St Mary Abbots Centre is 8 minutes walk from Notting Hill Gate Underground Station (Central, District and Circle Lines) and 5 minutes walk from High Street Kensington (District and Circle Lines).

From Notting Hill Gate Underground Station - take the south side exit, signposted to Kensington Church Street. Turn right into Church Street, follow it down hill for about 5 minutes. Turn left into Vicarage Gardens, right into Vicarage Gate and left into the continuation of Vicarage Gate. St Mary Abbots Church Hall is at the end of this cul-de-sac.

From High Street Kensington Underground Station  - walk through the shopping centre and out onto the High Street. Cross the road, and turn right, walking along the north side of the High Street. At St Mary Abbots Church, turn left in front of the war memorial onto Kensington Church Street. Cross over Church Street when you can, and continue walking up the hill. At the bend in Church Street, go straight on into Vicarage Gate, and then take the first right into the continuation of Vicarage Gate. St Mary Abbots Church Hall is at the end of this cul-de-sac.

Buses:
Routes 27, 28, 52, 70, 328 and 452 all go along Kensington Church Street. Additionally, routes 9, 10 and 49 all go along Kensington High Street, passing the southern end of Kensington Church Street.
