23rd May 2022 - Dr Marco Bastos Jr. - Zoom Web Event - Psychophysiological investigation of trance mediums

Registration is closed for this event
Mediumship can be defined as the alleged ability to communicate regularly with deceased personalities. This is a phenomenon found in many societies around the world and can reveal itself in numerous ways such as hearing or seeing spirits, speaking or writing under the influence of spirits, and spirit possession, amongst others. Mediumistic experiences have been described as having dissociative and psychotic-like characteristics, and may occur in both religious and non-religious contexts. Many non-invasive methods, such as electroencephalogram, can be used to investigate biological characteristics of claimed mediums in comparison with non-medium control subjects. Research data has increasingly demonstrated that culturally well-integrated mediums are often mentally and physically healthy. Making adequate distinctions between mediums and individuals with psychotic disorders may avoid stigmatisation and unnecessary psychiatric treatments.
