28th February 2022 - Gary Schwartz - Zoom Web Event - Synchronicities: A Challenge for Materialist Science

Registration is closed for this event
Synchronicities, also termed meaningful coincidences, are widely experienced by people of all ages, races, and spiritual perspectives, including atheists and the faithful. Despite the popularity of Jung’s pioneering clinical explorations of this phenomenon, and the efforts by Beitman to create what he terms “coincidence science” in his 2016 book Connecting with Coincidence: The New Science for Using Synchronicity and Serendipity in your Life, little empirical research has been conducted, and the topic is essentially ignored by mainstream academic psychology and science. In this talk, Gary E. Schwartz will present contemporary evidence establishing the reality of sequences of non-random, serial coincidences in real life as discussed in his book 2017 Super Synchronicity: Where Science and Spirit Meet. Schwartz makes the case that to fully understand the reality of supersynchronicities, it is essential to posit the existence of an active universal intelligence, what Larry Dossey terms in his 2014 One Mind: How Our Individual Mind Is Part of a Greater Consciousness and Why It Matters. Implications for postmaterialist science and theories of consciousness are discussed.

Gary E. Schwartz, Ph.D, is a Professor of Psychology, Medicine, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Surgery at the University of Arizona and Director of its Laboratory for Advances in Consciousness and Health.  Gary received his PhD from Harvard University in 1971 and was an Assistant Professor at Harvard University (1971-1976). He then served as a Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at Yale University, Director of the Yale Psychophysiology Center, and co-Director of the Yale Behavioral Medicine Clinic, before moving to the University of Arizona in 1988.  He has published more than 500 scientific papers, including six papers in the journal Science, co-edited 16 academic books, and is the author of 12 books, including The Case for Truth (2020, with Alan Bourey), Greater Reality Living (2019, with Mark Pitstick), Super Synchronicity (2017), An Atheist in Heaven (2016, with Paul Davids), The Sacred Promise (2011), The Energy Healing Experiments (2007, Foreword written by Dr. Richard Carmona, the 17th Surgeon General of the United States, winner of a Gold Nautilus Book Award), The G.O.D. Experiments (2006), and The Afterlife Experiments (2002). His latest co-edited academic book is Human Interaction with the Divine, the Sacred, and the Deceased: Scientific, Psychological, and Theological Perspectives (Summer 2021, with Thomas Plante). His latest book for the public is Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence: The Science and Ethics of Truth Seeking and Truth Abuse (Fall 2021). He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Psychological Society, and The Academy of Behavioral Medicine Research. Gary was a co-founder of the Academy for the Advancement of Postmaterialist Sciences and served as its first president. His research integrates mind-body medicine, energy medicine, and spiritual medicine, and his current research is focused on a computer automated, multi-center, multi-blinded, randomized control trials documenting hypothesized discarnate intelligence and communication technology (see www.soulphone.org ).
