Join us for an enlightening talk on Investigation of Possession, Entity Attachment and Corresponding Healing Modalities: An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. From the speaker: Possession is a phenomenon that spans nearly all cultures across recorded history. Possession can be either positive, which is sought after and intentionally induced by the experiencer, or negative, where the person is afflicted against their will. Whether possession is the inhabitation of a human body by a non-human or deceased entity, an altered state of consciousness or a mixture of the two does not change the fact that these are powerful and extraordinary experiences for the people afflicted by or wielding possession states. In this talk, I will be exploring the interstice between positive possession and negative possession when it is employed by practitioners treating possession and entity attachment. Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis, I will be looking at the meaning derived from these extraordinary experiences as well as clues to what may initiate these psi experiences, which are often credited as the source of profound healing.

TyLean Tuijl is a PhD student at Nottingham Trent University conducting qualitative research on possession states as both ritual practice and spiritual affliction. She has been a member of the SPR since 2022 and currently serves as the Student Representative on the SPR Council and as an investigator on the SPR's Spontaneous Cases Committee.
